ABOUT DR MATT BROADHURST
Dr Matthew Broadhurst is now offering a comprehensive Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery service to Brisbane and beyond as of December 2007, having returned from Boston, Massachusetts with significant experience from Harvard Medical School. Video stroboscopy for voice patient s, office-based laryngeal procedures and distal chip video endoscopy for patient evaluation and teaching are available in Matthew's rooms. Dr Matthew Broadhurst moved to Boston, Massachusetts for 2 years to pursue additional training at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. The fellowship included advanced techniques in Laryngeal surgery, and Head & Neck Cancer Surgery with
specialised lasers that were unique to Harvard until recently. He worked under Dr Steven Zeitels, a world leader in this field and had extensive exposure to the management of vocal cord paralysis, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, laryngeal cancer and a large volume of laryngeal and tracheal stenosis. There was a significant professional voice patient population including many high profile artists recognised world wide that received surgical care.
The fellowship also included a large population of spasmodic dysphonia patients and included over over 300 Botox injections during the 2 years. Matthew is keen to continue this Botox service for patients with various head and neck dystonias. Matthew also worked with research teams in laryngology and basic science, including an appointment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This research has been presented at national and international meetings and published in major Otolaryngology journals. Many studies involving this advanced laser technology and its application to the larynx were conducted with remarkable results. The green fibre carrying pulses of 532nm KTP laser energy to treat papilloma, can be seen above. Maximal preservation of the voice has been achieved at Harvard using this technology, including treating larynx cancer. The pulsed KTP and thulium lasers are now available to patients for treatment in Brisbane where Dr Broadhurst has his office.
